German Paper Money
On 1st August 1957 the Deutsche Bundesbank replaced the Bank deutscher Länder as central bank for West Germany (FRG) and started issuing the banknotes for the country. The German paper money continued to be called Deutsche Mark. The Mark in East Germany (GDR) was issued as a political reply to the introduction of the Deutsche Mark in West Germany, which ceased existing on 1st July 1990 - even before the official reunification of the Eastern and Western parts of Germany. Now, since 1 January 2002, the Euro banknotes have become the legal tender in all states participating in the European monetary union, including Germany.
