Numismatics has taken quite a peculiar approach as far as German paper money and German coins are concerned.
The main thing responsible for such a state of affairs is a peculiar political as well as a peculiar financial History of Germany.

The national German currency Mark came into existence in 1871 after the Grand German unification.
Before that the old German money used to be a local issue with the states, all having their own currency, coins and banknotes.
Then until 1906 the Reichsbank could only issue banknotes of 100 Mark or more.
Form 1 January 1910 the banknotes for the Reichsbank came to be the legal tender in Germany.

On 13 July 1914 their convertibility into gold was suspended.
After World War 1 the German currency saw a tough time. The German Mark started falling reaching a vicious circle by 1923. Towards the end of World War 2 the monetary situation in Germany was at the verge of a complete breakdown.

Grading the old coins of Germany is not a simple technique to apply. There are thousands of different coin types belonging to hundreds of years spanned through the history of the nation.

On 1st August 1957 the Deutsche Bundesbank replaced the Bank deutscher Länder as central bank for West Germany (FRG) and started issuing the banknotes for the country.
